Love Is In The Hair

Can I just start by saying how excited I was to find Mood Fabrics’ Exclusive Hairspray Stretch Brushed Cotton Twill?

First of all I’m a natural hair enthusiast and some of the hairstyles on the fabric remind me of ways in which I’ve styled my own hair. Also, I’ve been eyeing the pattern for this top for quite some time but never could seem to find a fabric that spoke to me loud enough to make it. Well let me tell you, this fabric spoke volumes (no pun intended 😉) and I had to have it.

I used Vogue Pattern V1728 for the top and I’d love to say it was an excellent experience making this but it definitely was not. Vogue Patterns in my opinion are some of the most difficult to execute and this one is definitely for the more experienced sewist. There was lots of unique details and inner construction involved. Oh, and buttons galore! Not so fun fact: I hate making garments that include buttons. Take a look at some of these details:

Typically I’m able to complete a project within a day or two even with my busy schedule but this one required several days to finish. Also I have to say I did make a few adjustments to the pattern to add a little “Lisha Charmane Flavor” to the overall style. The instructions recommend using a fabric that is double sided since the underside of the top can be visible at times. My fabric is not double sided so I had to install my side & back flounce backwards in order to make it work. I also readjusted my button bands to make one side longer than the other. I like the way it makes the collar look and I think it makes the entire top a little edgy overall.

All in all I am very pleased with the way my top turned out. My husband absolutely loves it. He and some other family members thought it was a jacket. I guess in a way it does kind of look like one. I’m just happy to be done with it to be honest. Now I’m ready for my next project. I’ve got some other fabrics from Mood Fabrics on my radar that I can’t wait to purchase.
